The Department of Upgrading Studies conducts courses for each of the following certificates of competency:

Upgrading courses are held twice a year for each certificate according to the academic calendar.
The educational aim of these courses is to conduct a general review of the different subjects dealt with in the examination papers to prepare the learners before sitting for the examinations.
The courses required for the certificates of competency are divided into two parts, the first part courses are examined by the Academy, while the second part courses are examined by the Examination Center run by Jordan Maritime Authority.
Upgrading courses are accredited by Jordan Maritime Authority in accordance to JMA decree no.(1) for the year 2004. Concerning: Articles & provisions of Issuing of certificates of competency for : Masters, Deck Officers, Marine Engineer and Ratings in accordance with the International Convention on Standard of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for seafarers, 1978, as amended "STWC", and in accordance with what was submitted by the undersecretary of Ministry of Maritime Transport, and in accordance with what was deemed necessary.
The standards of competence that have to be met by seafareas at this level (operations) are defined in Part A of the STCW Code, in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers Convention, as ameneded in 1995.
This course covers the minimum standard of competence for officers in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine-room or designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine-room, see STCW Code Table A-III/1.
It sets out the education and training to achieve the following functions at the operational level as detailed in the IMO Model Course No. 7.04:
- Marine engineering.
- Electrical, electronic and control engineering.
- Maintenance and repair.
- Controlling the operation of the ship and care for the persons on board.
Course duration: 19 weeks.
The standards of competence that have to be met by seafareas at this level (Managment) are defined in Part A of the STCW Code, in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers Convention, as ameneded in 1995.
This course covers the minimum standard of competence for Second Engineer Officers on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3000 KW prpoulsion power or more, see STCW Code, Table A-III/2.
It sets out the education and training to achieve the following functions at the management level as detailed in the IMO Model Course No. 7.02:
- Marine engineering.
- Electrical, electronic and control engineering.
- Maintenance and repair.
- Controlling the operation of the ship and care for the persons on board.
Course duration: 22 weeks
The standards of competence that have to be met by seafareas at this level (Managment) are defined in Part A of the STCW Code, in the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers Convention, as ameneded in 1995.
This course covers the minimum standard of competence for Chief Engineer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3000 KW prpoulsion power or more, see STCW Code, Table A-III/2.
It sets out the education and training to achieve the following functions at the management level as detailed in the IMO Model Course No. 7.02:
- Marine engineering
- Electrical, electronic and control engineering.
- Maintenance and repair.
- Controlling the operation of the ship and care for the persons on board.
Course duration: 9 weeks
The study courses of the examinations of this certificate and the related short mandatory courses are set out in detail in IMO model course No. 7.03 entitled "Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch" and the requirements stipulated in the STCW Code table A-II/1 "Specification of minimum standard of competence for officer in charge of navigational watch on ships of 500 GRT or more", issued by the IMO, as amended, in order to meet the following tasks at operational level:
- UM 10 Navigation
- UM 11 Cargo Handling and Stowage
- UM 12 Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board
Course duration is 19 weeks followed by written and oral exams conducted by Jordan Maritime Authority (JMA) in JAMS premises
The study courses of the examination of both certificates and related short mandatory courses are set out in details in IMO model course No. 7.01 entitled "Master and Chief Mate" and STCW Code table A-II/2 "Specification of minimum standard of competence for masters and chief mate on ships of 500 GRT and more"Íž Issued by the IMO, as amended, in order to meet the following tasks at management level :
- UM 21 Cargo Handling & Stowage
- UM 22 Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board
Chief Mate course duration is 22 weeks followed by written and oral exams conducted by JMA in JAMS premises.
Master Course duration is 9 weeks followed by Oral exam conducting by JMA in JAMS premises.
On successful completion of the courses and the requisite watch keeping experience, officers will be capable of taking full responsibility for the safety of the ship, its passengers, crew and cargo. They will be aware of their obligations under international agreements and conventions concerning safety and protection of the marine environment and will be able to take the practical measures necessary to meet these obligations.
