Overview

The Admission and Registration Department was established with the beginning of the establishment of the Academy in 2004, and it is the backbone of the Academy as it is directly linked with the students of the Academy and the various departments and departments. It is also one of the important and vital departments upon which the academic process in its various forms is based, starting with the procedures for admission and registration of the student in its various stages and ensuring the implementation of all laws and instructions related to the academic process and ending with the completion of the clearance procedures and the student’s graduation.

JAMS provides all the educational programs needed by the workers on board the ships within the international principles and standards set by the International Maritime Organization IMO.

Jordan Academy for Maritime Studies welcomes students of different nationalities provided that they hold General Secondary School Certificate or equivalent as a requirement to enroll in the Academy according to their own choices. So fare, students of more than 38 nationalities, Arab and foreign, have joined theAcademy.

Jordan Academy for Maritime Studies (JAMS) is an educational institution specialized in Maritime Education and Training (MET). It was established in 2003, to start its first academic year in 2004.

The Academy is accredited by Jordan Maritime Commission (JMC) – the maritime arm of ministry of Transport -. Graduates will obtain a CoC/ CoP issued by JMC and approved by International Maritime Organization (IMO) to qualify them to work in different positions/ ranks at merchant ships World Wide.

The Academy qualifies its graduates, including officers and engineers, to work on board merchant ships worldwide.

It is known internationally that all maritime education and training institutions are accredited by maritime administration
in all countries. Therefore, the Jordan Maritime Commission undertakes the role of accrediting the Academy since it is the representative of the Ministry of Transport in Jordan. 

Ever since its foundation, the Academy, in cooperation with JMC, have realized the following achievements:

  • Jordan inclusion on the white list of countries which
    have fulfilled the provisions of standards of Training. Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers Convention (STCW) 1978 as amended, which is considered an international recognition of Jordanian
    certificates of competency.
  • European Union recognition of Jordanian Maritime Education and Training System is considered a certificate of appreciation for holders of Jordan Maritime Certificates which enables them to work on vessels
    all over the world including vessels flying European Union States Flags.

The academy offers a lot of courses and specialties:

–      Marine Navigation: leads to an officer in charge of a navigation watch certificate of competency (second officer which qualifies graduates to work on board ships as marine officers.

Studying in this department starts by basic studies
program, then sea-guided training which leads to obtaining the first certificate of competency (second officer). Those willing can pursue study towards chief mate then master mariner.

–      Marine Engineering: leads to an officer in charge of engineering watch certificate of competency (third engineer which qualifies them to work as maintenance and operation engineers in engine rooms where there are main engines and auxiliary equipment.

Studying in this department starts by basic studies programs. Then, sea- guided training which leads to obtaining the first
certificate of competency (third engineer). Those willing can pursue study towards second engineer, then chief engineer.

Marine Electrical Engineering: leads to electrical technician officers (ETO) that qualifies graduates to work on commercial (vessels).

  • General Secondary School certificate or equivalent (transcript) attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jordan embassy in your country in addition to the Ministry of Education- Jordan.
  • Attested copy of the certificate of birth
  • Attested copy of ID or passport
  • A Personal photographs (4*6)
  • Medical fitness report -attached with application- .

There is no limit, but two main provisions to be met by an applicant:

  1. Pass general secondary school certificate.
  2. Be medically fit.

Also, applicants have to complete all required documents and of course the availability of a vacancy. Chances of acceptance are higher for GSSC higher grades.

The fee per credit hour for any of the specializations offered in the basic studies program is J.D. 95 per credit hour, and the fee per credit hour for the sea-guided training program is J.D. 20. Note: these fees are fixed for all students of different Arab and foreign nationalities.

The academy adopts the credit hours system according to Jordan Maritime Commission System (Ministry of Transportation).

Yes, just like other maritime education and training institutions, students wear a uniform provided by the Academy at a quite reasonable cost.

It is nearly four years to get the first certificate of competency divided into three stages:

  • The basic studies phase is two years (4 semesters with 84 credit hours) for students of scientific or industrial (university) who have obtained an average (65% or more) in the general secondary exam. Students with a lower average or literary stream, I.T. or industrial stream graduates (labor market), need to attend an additional semester (Induction course with 18 credit hours) which is taught at the Academy’s headquarters in Amman – Jordan.
  • Twelve months of practical training (sea guided training) on board ships (36 credit hours). 
  • A training course for obtaining a Certificate of Competency of approximately 6 months – Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch (2nd mate(, Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch (3rd Eng), Electro Technical Officer (ETO),  which is taught at the Academy’s headquarters in Amman, Jordan.
  • Upon successful completion of the above stages, students will be granted a certificate of competency issued by Jordan government represented by (JMC).

Yes, the academy provides optional student accommodation in a building adjacent to the academy, equipped with all the facilities that the student needs, and available in several options from which the student can choose what suits him (single, double, triple accommodation).

Yes, passing the Marlins English exam with a score of at least 60% is a graduation requirement from the academy.

The academy qualifies its graduates to get certificate of competency (COC) issued by Jordan Maritime Commission in the name of the government of The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan following assessment carried out by JMC.

Registration is open year-round, and studies begin after acceptance in the Next semester (first/second/summer).

The Academy has graduated more than 3000 students so far, from all study programs (basic studies and upgrading). Currently, more than 600 students are enrolled in all study programs from different countries such as:
