The objective of this course to be familiar with the origin of the nautical mile and be well practiced in measuring distances on a Mercator chart. The ability to determine courses and distances by Mercator sailing for rhumb line passages of greater distance is important for operational level officers of the watch to support voyage planning and conduct.
