Jordan Academy for Maritime Studies Hosts National Workshop on Developing the Maritime Fleet and Promoting Investment
Under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Nidal Al-Qatamin, Minister of Transport, the Jordan Maritime Studies Academy (JAMS) organized a national specialized workshop entitled “The National Maritime Carrier: Importance and Investment Promotion”, held on Thursday, 5 February 2026, at the Academy’s headquarters.
In his opening address, the President of JAMS, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Massad, emphasized that the Academy—being the first institution specialized in maritime education and training in Jordan for more than 23 years—firmly believes that qualified human capital is the cornerstone of the maritime transport industry, given its complex and highly specialized nature.
He highlighted that the concept of the national maritime carrier has evolved alongside global trade patterns to include national companies owning or operating vessels flying the Jordanian flag and serving Jordan’s foreign trade on a regular basis. He stressed that establishing a strong national maritime fleet is no longer merely an economic option, but a key pillar of national and economic security, particularly during global crises and disruptions.
H.E. Dr. Nidal Al-Qatamin affirmed that the maritime transport sector represents a promising investment opportunity for Jordan amid regional developments and emerging economic corridors. He called for transitioning from traditional operational models to an integrated maritime investment ecosystem based on modern legislation, technical regulation, capacity building, and high-value maritime services.
The Minister noted that the Ministry of Transport, in coordination with the Jordan Maritime Commission, is working to provide a stable and attractive strategic framework for maritime investment, while JMSA plays a vital role in developing maritime competencies, specialized training programs, and advanced maritime services supported by modern technologies.
The workshop included technical sessions and expert discussions delivered by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ali, addressing the current status of Jordan’s maritime fleet, trade challenges, and international best practices, particularly the South Korean experience in developing national maritime fleets.
The workshop concluded with a panel discussion and a set of recommendations emphasizing that developing the national maritime fleet should be approached as a state-level strategic project, implemented gradually through strong public–private partnerships to achieve sustainable economic impact.
